Picture this, you open your email and lo and behold there is a dire warning of a deadly computer virus and a request to send it on to all your friends in order to keep them and their computers safe. What do you do? Do you:
A. Immediately pass it all to everyone you know B. Trash it C. Research it and if it is real pass it on and if it's a hoax inform the person who sent it to you
Now hopefully you choose C, but I would even prefer B over A. I too was a newbie once, passing on every dire warning to my email list. I did pass on the chain letters, choosing instead to toss them in the trash where they belong. Then one day, my sister, subtle woman that she is, sent me a joke about hoaxes. This hit me and hit me hard. I was the person that they talked about. I would believe this warning because it was sent to me by a good friend, who probably believed because it was sent to THEM by a good friend and so on and so forth.
If you would like to start researching these items, there are quite a few reliable sites that research virus' and hoaxes and chain letters. My personal favorite is the CIAC. This is a government site that researches those mentioned above and more. (you can find this site listed in our directory under reference).
Since it would probably take all day, we won't go into what sick or totally bored mind it takes to sit down and perpetrate a hoax. I will just leave them with this thought.....Get a life!
If you would like me to send you the hoax joke that my sister sent to me please email me below.
